It has started! The best documentaries have been selected which are interesting or refreshing and can be viewed in Amsterdam until 1 December!
Normally, we wouldn’t feel the need to see documentaries; they are too serious, have a ‘weird’ subject, or are not exciting enough. We would rather watch Avatar, The Notebook or The Lord of the Rings. At least, that’s what we, at 5&33, thought.
Until we heard people talk about the IDFA. A festival during which only the world’s best documentaries are shown. Documentaries which make you think about life, society, or a lot worse: war.
One of the documentaries we would definitely recommend to watch is called ‘#chicagoGirl — The Social Network Takes on a Dictator’. The documentary shows the life of a 19-year old student ‘Ala’a Basatneh’ who lives Syria and decides to stand up for herself. With 1.200 likes on Facebook and 2.000 followers on Twitter she’s built a huge network. She organizes demonstrations via Facebook events, posts videos of demonstrations etc. and plans an escape route via Google Maps.
What seemed to have started as a peaceful protest ends in a violent situation…
Tip: just go and watch it!!
